You hear a lot about vaping, but really you might not know much about the details. In addition, there are plenty of common misconceptions surrounding the health affects of vaping compared to smoking. What Is Vaping?
Someone who vapes utilizes a device like an electronic cigarette (or e-cig), vape pen, or vape mod which vaporizes e-liquid. Sometimes it’s easier to say what vaping is not to fully understand the difference between smoking and vaping.

What is E-Liquid?
Most e-liquids, if not all, are created using Nicotine, Flavoring, Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). E-liquid contains a much lower level of nicotine compared to traditional cigarettes, and in fact, many vapers only use a small amount of nicotine or none at all. Additionally, PG is found in products we regularly use such as food coloring or even some medications. VG is a sweet, thick vegetable concentrated liquid that, again, can be found in multiple products we use daily. Flavor is simply the added ingredient to give the vape a desired flavor, like strawberry cream.
What About My Health?
First and foremost, vaping is a successful tool to use if you want to quit smoking. It’s obvious what benefits you receive from quitting the harmful habit of smoking, especially when you consider the consequences of lung cancer, bronchitis, heart diseases, difficulty breathing, and much more. Aside from of quitting smoking, you are using little to no nicotine while vaping, thus you vastly decrease the chances for addiction and other harmful effects in the body. Lastly, it’s a win-win situation because vaping does not produce second-hand smoke, which can have negative effects on others around you.
The best estimate thus far states that e-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than smoking. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that e-cigarettes are acting as a gateway to smoking for non-smokers or youth. Numbers and research doesn’t lie; so don’t get caught up in false information.
