Last August, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/glossary\/fda\/\">FDA<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/2017\/07\/28\/fda-press-release-pmta-submission-deadline-moved-to-2022\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0a major shakeup to the agency\u2019s policy on e-cigarettes which amongst other things includes the de-nicotinization of cigarettes, and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/2017\/07\/28\/fda-press-release-pmta-submission-deadline-moved-to-2022\/\">PMTA deadline delay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then yesterday, on Monday the 11th of December,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/NewsEvents\/Newsroom\/PressAnnouncements\/ucm588116.htm\">the agency announced the \u201cEvery Try Counts\u201d<\/a>. A campaign targeted at smokers aged between 25 and 54 who have previously tried quitting with no success. The two-year campaign will be launched next month across 35 U.S. markets and features print, digital, radio, and out-of-home ads, such as on billboards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FDA is committed to reducing tobacco-related disease and death by helping people quit combustible cigarettes and implementing comprehensive policies to reduce addiction to nicotine. Our aim is to render cigarettes minimally or non-addictive, while encouraging the development of potentially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/2017\/04\/28\/more-data-confirms-that-vaping-is-a-safer-alternative-to-smoking\/\">less harmful tobacco products<\/a>\u00a0for adults who still want or need access to nicotine. At the same time, we\u2019re also taking new steps to improve access and use of FDA-approved medicinal nicotine products to help smokers quit,\u201d concluded Gottlieb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The role of electronic cigarettes in smoking cessation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In line with the above, last August the commissioner also said that the FDA\u2019s new tobacco plan supports product innovation so that smokers can obtain the nicotine they crave, without the added carcinogens derived from the combustion of tobacco.\u00a0He had pointed out that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/2017\/07\/27\/us-study-the-advent-of-e-cigs-corresponds-to-decreased-smoking-rates\/\">smoking rates continue to drop<\/a>\u00a0across the US, however approximately 480,000 people continue to die per year due to smoking related conditions.
